Fall 2020 Master’s Course Schedule
Important Information:
- Days and Times are in Eastern Standard Time (EST)
- MBA and LAW Classes will meet LIVE – synchronously unless otherwise noted.
- Technical Courses (CS, ECE, ORIE, INFO), courses with TECH prefix, and Studio courses may have a combination of live and recorded class meetings (for viewing anytime). This information will be communicated by the faculty and confirmed on the syllabus and Canvas Course site.
- As you enroll in classes, be mindful of the days and times of courses so that they do not overlap. The registration system will not recognize time conflicts since technical courses are set up as asynchronous without date/times. If you have questions about which class meetings will be live, please follow up with the faculty member for the designated course.
- Students will be auto-enrolled in the required Studio courses, TECH 5900 Product Studio or TECH 5901 Preparing for Studio, towards the end of August. As such, students should save 4 credits in their schedules if they are a technical student in the following programs: Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or ORIE and if they are a professional student in the MBA or LLM program. First-year Connective Media, Health Tech, and Urban Tech students will be auto-enrolled in the 3 credit Product Studio course.
- If you are a Non-MBA student interested in taking an MBA class, please note you are required to take TECH 5301 Business Fundamentals. You can concurrently enroll in Business Fundamentals with another MBA class this Fall term as well. Alternatively, you can be waive out of taking Business Fundamentals by submitting an application (we will send this information after per-enrollment). For now we advise to please sign up for Business Fundamentals (even if you are applying for a waiver) if you intend to take a CT MBA class!
- Thursday evening classes that would typically occur on Studio Maker dates September 24, October 22, and November 12 (starting at 2 p.m. and on) will hold make up class meetings the Sunday evening (EST) following the sprint.
- Class information including course descriptions and course numbers can be found on the Fall 2020 Class Roster. Students should filter by Cornell Tech for the location.
- The Cornell Tech Academic Calendar is viewable here – you will see important holidays, breaks, and more!
- FAQs are listed at the bottom of this page – please review!

FAQs
ALL CLASSES
When do classes begin?
Cornell Tech will start classes on Thursday, August 27, 2020.
How do I know which classes I need to meet graduation requirements?
Students should refer to the curriculum sheet for their program on the Student Services website.
How can I find out about faculty office hours?
Faculty will provide students with information on when they will hold office hours. If you have specific questions about office hours or course content, please email your faculty member directly after classes have started.
CS, ECE, INFO & ORIE (TECHNICAL) CLASSES
My class has been assigned four time slots each week. Do I need to be present for class in all four slots?
Most technical classes are each assigned four slots each week in order to provide time for faculty to connect with students across a variety of time zones. Faculty will inform students how slots will be used and what attendance is expected. Students will not be required to attend all four slots.
Where can I find the course days and times?
The four slots that are designated for your classes are listed on the Student Services website. Your faculty will provide you with information on how the slots will be used.
Where can I find out about the differences between Applied Machine Learning, Data Science in the Wild, and Machine Learning Engineering?
The faculty of these courses have put together this document in order for you to make informed decisions about enrolling in these courses.
MBA AND LAW (PROFESSIONAL) CLASSES
My class is offered during only one or two slots each week. Do I need to be present for each class?
You are expected to participate synchronously for most NBAY (MBA program classes) and LAW classes in which you enroll. There are some classes with multiple sections at different times and some classes that will have asynchronous offerings, so please check the applicable course listing. For those classes, you are expected to register and participate in the section that best fits your schedule and time zone.
Some of my NBAY requirements are in time slots that are difficult for me to attend. What should I do?
We have a number of solutions for you to be able to complete those requirements. Please check with your Program Director.
Some of the electives for my program are in time slots that are difficult for me to attend. What should I do?
We have only limited slots available for electives, and some of them have had to be scheduled in time slots that may be inconvenient for some students. If that is the case for you, and you strongly desire to take the course, please contact the instructor to see if he or she would be willing to permit you to participate via an independent study or directed reading alternative. You will also need the approval of your Program Director.
I’ve heard that Business and Law sometimes offer weekend classes. Will that be the case this year, and how can I participate?
Both Business and Law will hold a small number of intensive weekend classes. Please note that the schedules for these classes will be rigorous and they will not be offered asynchronously.
Can I enroll in technical classes?
MBA and Law students can enroll in CS, ECE, INFO, or ORIE classes if they do not overlap with required program classes and prerequisites have been met. You may be able to take advantage of the multiple time slots offered for those classes if convenient for your schedule.
STUDIO CLASSES
Which studio courses will I be auto-enrolled into?
All masters students will be enrolled in Product Studio, which is 4 credits for 1-year students and 3 credits for incoming 2-year students. (You’ll take the fourth credit in your second year.)
How will the Studio schedule work?
The Studio will use a combination of live sessions and pre-recorded lecture content. Content that would normally be delivered in large classroom lectures will generally be available in a pre-recorded format, so that we can use our live sessions for discussion, feedback, and team collaboration, incorporating Cornell Tech faculty and our external practitioner mentor network. Since we expect students to be in various time zones, we have reserved several blocks of time for Studio:
- Monday – Thursday, 7:30 – 9 a.m.
- Tuesday and Thursday, 2 – 7 p.m.
When are Studio Maker Days?
Studio Maker Days will start at 2 p.m. on September 24, October 22, and November 12, and will run through the end of the following day. During these times, teams will be expected to make meaningful progress on your projects, and no other Cornell Tech activities will be scheduled.
